Welcome to our organization
Welcome to the North Kansas City Kiwanis Club-get involved today and make a difference in your neighborhood!
We hope you enjoy visiting our website and we invite you to visit our club in person anytime! Join us for a weekly program and comraderie as we plan how we will serve the children of the local and global community. The North Kansas City Kiwanis Club meets weekly, Wednesdays, noon, at Finnegan's Restaurant, 505 N. 18 th St., North Kansas City, MO. No reservations required-just drop in or contact us for more information. In addition to our weekly meetings, we also try to visit a neighboring club once a month as part of our bylaws.
The North Kansas City Kiwanis Club has a proud history. It was chartered on December 8, 1937, with 38 original members, meeting in the basement of the Ross Restaurant which was just north of the present CVS Pharmacy, Armour and Swift Streets. Later, the club moved to the Paradise Theater building and met on the second floor. Nelle Brooks was the chief cook. In 1961, the NKC Kiwanis moved to the Gold Buffet Restaurant, moved again in 1994, and then moved back the the former Gold Buffet-now Finnegan's.
Following the 1987 vote of Kiwanis International, the men's service organization became open to women. Becky Floyd became the first woman member of the NKC Kiwanis Club in 1989.
There are currently 26 active members of the North Kansas City Kiwanis Club doing vital service in our community.Photos
Service Projects
Mid-America Games
North Kansas City Kiwanis' members work one weekend every year helping host the Mid-America Games for athletes with disabilities. Members keep score, serve food, help the athletes move from event to event, and help underwrite the cost of ribbons.
Scholarships
NKC Kiwanis fund three annual $1,500 scholarships to deserving high school seniors. Kiwanis members spend hours reviewing applications to select the recipients. Members always attend the school's awards ceremony and the recipients and guests attend a Kiwanis luncheon in June.
Library Summer Reading Program
Each year, NKC Kiwanis serve lunch (for 700+ attendees!) at the North Kansas City Public Library Summer Reading “kick off” picnic. Kiwanis members volunteer many hours planning, cooking, serving, and cleaning up knowing that this project encourages our children to read throughout the summer months.
Healthy Families
Kiwanis members can always be found at the local Hy-Vee grocery store the Saturday before Mother's Day! We collect baby and children's food, items and money for Healthy Families. These donations, distributed through Healthy Families, support Northland families in need.
Family Health Clinic
NKC Kiwanis members bring hammers, paint brushes, drills and everything else needed to help with the work day at the Family Health Clinic. We've taken out walls, removed counters, and painted window trim (just for a start!).
